600 Artists Take Part in Jersey City Open Studios

Is Jersey City the new Brooklyn? Thousands of visitors flocked to the annual Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST) this past weekend.
Some 130 galleries, artists’ studios, galleries, and pop-up exhibitions featured a wide variety of works by more than 600 artists, including performances, multimedia events, film and music. According to the Hudson Reporter, the Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs reported a significant increase in artist registration and exhibition venues this year, partly thanks to a new app allowing stops to be added to the art tour close to the start of the weekend. Celebrating its 24th year, JCAST, formerly Jersey City Artists Studio Tour, also revamped its interactive website to provide more detailed directions and event information this year. Good idea.
Featured areas in the self-guided tour included the Village neighborhood of downtown Jersey City, with its galleries, including Mary Benson, the Drawing Rooms, Village West and the Raven. The city’s Bergen/Lafayette and Greenville neighborhoods attracted throngs to a number of performances and music events. In the Journal Square area, Mana Contemporary extended its hours; and Art House Productions inaugurated its new venue at 136 Magnolia Ave.
