An Interview with Artist Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey

VIDEO: A conversation featured as part of artnet's partnership with ArtTable.

artnet is thrilled to present an in-depth conversation with Brooklyn-based artist Wangechi Mutu (Kenyan, b.1972) about the current survey of her work, Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey, at the Brooklyn Museum. Hailed by The New York Times as inventing her own brand of exoticism, Mutu is best known for her highly recognizable, fantastical collages that incorporate a variety of themes and obscure materials. She explores themes of sexuality and femininity, consumerism and excess, violence, and the rift between nature and culture, ethnicity and identity. Her work has been exhibited at many institutions, but this is the first survey held in the United States, showcasing the variety of works Mutu has created over the last two decades. For more information on Mutu’s career, please visit the Wangechi Mutu Catalogue, available on artnet Monographs.
