Kimsooja speaks at ArtTable

The monthly artnet Artist Breakfast series, in partnership with ArtTable, features artist Kimsooja (Korean, b.1957), an internationally acclaimed performance, video, and installation artist whose work frequently addresses issues of politics and identity. Born in South Korea in 1957, Kimsooja first received recognition for her work in the early 1990s, following an artist-in-residence position at MoMA PS1 in New York City. This residency paved the way for some of her most renowned works, including Bottari, Cities on the Move—2727 km Bottari Truck (1997) and A Needle Woman (1999). Her art is well-known for subverting the traditional dichotomies of subject/object, artist/viewer, specificity/abstraction, and presence/absence. In her performance art, she often seeks to empower the viewer, hoping that they will create meaning for the work rather than simply allowing the artist to shape the experience.
