German artist Tobias Rehberger has been commissioned to produce a permanent artwork for the new metro station Pont Cardinet, set to open in 2017. It will the second artist-designed metro station in Paris. The first, conceived by Jean-Michel Othoniel for the Palais Royal-Musée du Louvre stop and inaugurated in 2000, has been a big hit among tourists and Parisians alike.

Rehberger’s piece is a joint commission by the rail network RATP and French property developer Emerige, whose chairman, collector Laurent Dumas, has a long-standing commitment to contemporary art. The new artwork will be built on the ground floor of a new building designed by Chinese agency MAD, together with French architect Christian Biecher.
