2015 Sharjah Biennial Will Open Week of the Armory Show

The dates for next year’s Sharjah Biennial have been announced, and, like so many other international exhibitions, biennials, and fairs have done for 2015, the 12th edition of the exhibition has rejiggered its dates. Since 2009, the fair has opened around March 15, but the opening of Sharjah Biennial 12: “The Past, the Present, the Possible” has been pushed up a week to March 5, directly overlapping with New York’s Armory Show (running March 5–8).

Presumably, the Sharjah move is in response to Art Basel in Hong Kong’s move from mid-May to March 13–17, which was in turn to avoid the earlier-than-usual preview of the 2015 Venice Biennale. It’s beginning to seem like there’s never a good week to host an international art event given the ever-more-crowded calendar.

If you think March 2015 is going to be overwhelming, know that May is just as terrifying, now that the Venice Biennale and Frieze New York—not to mention the numerous satellite fairs—have set the stage for an epic art world pileup. Jet-setting collectors are going to be racking up a lot of frequent flyer miles next spring.
