Ai Weiwei to Direct Film in Berlin From Beijing Via Skype

The celebrated Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei is preparing to remotely direct a short film in Berlin from his studio in Beijing via Skype, the Guardian reports.

An outspoken critic of the Chinese government, Weiwei has been unable to leave China since 2011 when his passport was confiscated following his arrest without charge.

The producer of the ambitious project, Claus Clausen, will be on set in the German capital to implement Weiwei’s instructions. He explained “The shooting will be filmed and screened in real time on big monitors in Berlin on Potsdamer Platz and in Beijing on a little screen in Weiwei’s studio, he sees a wide shot of the set.” He added “This is a project that exemplifies the belief that love can overcome obstacles.”

The short film titled Berlin, I Love You will focus on the artist’s relationship with his six-year-old son Ai Lao. Weiwei told the Guardian “The film is about my son. He’s been living in Berlin since August, and I cannot visit him.”

The film’s script was written by Ai Lao’s mother, documentary filmmaker Wang Fen. It will also feature a cameo appearance by the German actor Til Schweiger.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Berlin I Love You is part of a series of ten love stories told by a select group of directors set in different cities around the world. The filming coincides with the 65th  Berlin International Film Festival.
