Amy Winehouse Sculpture for Camden Market
Scott Eaton has been tapped to create a sculpture of late singer Amy Winehouse, the Guardian reports. The life size sculpture is to be unveiled in Camden’s Stables Market on September 14th. The market is nearby the house in which Winehouse died at the age of 27 in July 2011.
“We want to try and get people away from Camden Square where Amy’s house was because although it was a lovely house and she loved it there, it’s got bad memories for everyone including her fans. By taking the focal point back into the stables it will create a better atmosphere and people will be able to remember Amy how she was,” Winhouse’s father told the paper, adding that the statue was as much a thank you to her fans that supported his family after the singer’s death as it was to commemorate his daughter.
According to Eaton, Camden council typically does not allow for statues to be created in any individual’s honor until at least 20 years after their death. “In Amy’s case they made an exception,” he said. “It’s a great honour to have the statue in the Stables. Amy was an integral part of Camden and still is, so you couldn’t really think of putting a statue for her anywhere else, could you really?”
