El Salvador’s newly-elected President, Salvador Sanchez Ceren, has converted the country’s presidential residence into a museum, according to the AFP. The opulent home, located in San Salvador, opened its first exhibition on Sunday, featuring nearly 50 works of art by Salvadoran painters and sculptors.

A leftist former rebel commander, Sanchez Ceren decided to continue living in his more modest home and neighborhood of the capital city. The presidential residence’s new museum is aimed at educating Salvadorans about their nation’s cultural heritage and to give greater access to the arts and culture, particularly to the poor.

Attendance to Sunday’s opening event was limited to members of a select group of human rights organizations who were greeted by Sanchez Ceren and his wife, Margarita Villata de Sanchez.
