Upper East Side Gallery Merger Unites Gavin Spanierman and Gerald Peters
Gavin Spanierman LTD and Gerald Peters Gallery are merging their Upper East Side operations, effective immediately. Spanierman will be managing the New York business, which will be run out of the current Gerald Peters space at 24 East 78th Street. Peters will continue to run his original Santa Fe gallery, first opened in 1972. The New York location of Gerald Peters first launched in 1992, while Gavin Spanierman LTD opened its doors in 2009.
“Gerry is well-known for his expertise in Western master works; artists such as Charles Russel, Frederick Remington, and Alfred Jacob Miller,” said Spanierman in a phone conversation with artnet News. “He was one of Georgia O’Keefe’s dealers, and has a strong background in American Modernism. My expertise is in 19th-century art; the Hudson River School and American Impressionism. It creates synergy when you put those two levels of expertise together.”
The merged gallery will retain the Gerald Peters name. Spanierman said he expects to close his Madison Avenue storefront “within the next month or so.” Also joining the Peters/Spainerman team is Sallie Wiggins, formerly of New York’s Knoedler Gallery. She will be the director of the modern and contemporary program.
