artnet News recently heard that Tanya Bonakdar Gallery was looking for a space in Los Angeles and will make an announcement in the coming months. Bonakdar, who founded her gallery in 1994 in New York’s Soho neighborhood and moved it to Chelsea in 1998, represents Olafur Eliasson, Turner Prize winner Martin Boyce, and Sarah Sze, who represented the United States at the 55th Venice Biennale. When artnet News called the gallery, we were told they would neither confirm nor deny the rumors of the future LA space.

Bonakdar is among the many galleries, both in New York  and internationally, who have set their sight on the West Coast. Hauser & Wirth, which has spaces in London, Zurich, and New York, is planning to open a Los Angeles gallery in partnership with former MOCA curator Paul Schimmel, Hauser, Wirth & Schimmel. Gavin Brown’s Enterprise leased a space last year in Downtown LA, run by his artist Laura Owens, and West Village gallery Maccarone also has plans to open a space in Downtown LA in 2015. This westward shift of New York galleries coincides with the movement within Los Angeles of galleries from the more established arts districts of Culver City and West Hollywood to woollier locales in the east like Hollywood and Downtown.
