Jane Campion to Direct Film Version of Rachel Kushner’s ‘The Flamethrowers’?
In a new interview with the Guardian, veteran kiwi filmmaker Jane Campion—of The Piano fame—let drop that she is, in interviewer Andrew Pulver’s words, “on the verge of closing a deal to shoot an adaptation” of Rachel Kushner’s popular, National Book Award-shortlisted novel The Flamethrowers.
Set partly amid the Soho art scene of early-1970s New York, it follows the misadventures of a young artist from Reno who moves to New York after art school to pursue a career as a kind of minimalist Land and performance artist whose practice is defined by her love of motorcycles and addiction to speed. Circumstances too complex to summarize here leave her in a lurch in Italy, where she falls in with a group of radicals amid the ongoing protests in Rome.
Indie film producer extraordinaire Scott Rudin is attached to produce the adaptation, though there’s no word on whether or not Kushner will be working on the screenplay.
