Major Emil Nolde Painting Stolen from Danish Church

A major painting by early German-Danish expressionist Emil Nolde was stolen from a Danish church either late Monday night or early Tuesday morning according to the German news agency, dpa. Titled, Christus zu Emmaus (1904) the painting is estimated to be worth 10 million Danish krone (approx. US$1.85 million). According to the artnet Price Database, if such a price were to be achieved at auction, it would place the work within Emil Nolde’s top 25 all-time results.

According to police, there were no signs of forced entry into the church, leading them to believe that the perpetrator may have hidden inside the church until after it closed on Monday evening.
