Marlborough Will Park Public Sculptures Along Broadway
The New York Times reports that the Broadway Malls, a landscaped median stretching from Columbus Circle to Mitchel Square at 167th Street, are about to get a makeover thanks to Max Levai and Pascal Spengemann of Marlborough Chelsea, as well as the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and the Broadway Mall Association.
Beginning in September, the “Broadway Morey Boogie” (a reference to the famous painting by Piet Mondrian Broadway Boogie Woogie) will feature installations by Dan Colen, Paul Druecke, Matt Johnson, Sarah Braman, Tony Matelli (see Tony Matelli’s Stray Dog Sculpture Stolen From New York Subway Station), and others, with participation from the artists’ respective galleries, including Gagosian, Mitchell-Innes & Nash, and Blum & Poe. In addition to the sculptures, Milwaukee’s Green Gallery is also planning a pop-up exhibition space associated with the project, though the location of the space is currently undetermined.
Jonathan Kuhn, director of art and antiquities for the Parks Department said of the project: “It’s stretching five miles, considerably larger than any other site we’ve programmed… it will traverse through many neighborhoods.”
