MoMA PS1 Extends Maria Lassnig Retrospective
On May 20, five days before the exhibition was due to close, MoMA PS1 announced that it has extended its retrospective devoted to the just-deceased Austrian painter Maria Lassnig through September 7. The exhibition, which brings together some 50 paintings from public and private collections the world over, is the most comprehensive exhibition to date at at US museum devoted to the artist, who died on May 6. She was 94 years old. Lassnig had won a lifetime achievement at last year’s Venice Biennale.
The PS1 exhibition, which was co-curated by Peter Eleey and Jocelyn Miller, and co-organized by Austria’s Neue Galerie, Graz – Universalmuseum Joanneum, brings together works from the early-1940s to the 2000s. It tracks Lassnig’s evolution from the figurative work of her academic training and her experiments with abstraction to her eventual trademark style of stylized self-portraiture.
Maria Lassnig is on view at MoMA PS1 through September 7.
