Phillips’s new chairman and chief executive Edward Dolman plans to open a new salesroom for the auction house in Hong Kong, the Art Newspaper reports. He told TAN that he hopes to move forward with the plans “as soon as possible.”
The announcement comes directly on the tails of another announcement, earlier this week, about the debut of the auctioneer’s new 73,000-square-foot auction house in London (“Phillips Opens Massive New Flagship in London“). That house, located on Berkeley Square in the art world power neighborhood of Mayfair, will hold its first sale on October 15, during Frieze Week.
Dolman told the New York Times that the new London house is “a statement of intent.” Announcing plans to expand in Hong Kong demonstrates just how ambitious those intentions are.
The move is not Dolman’s first major expansion initiative for an auction house. TAN notes that during his 27 years at Christie’s he oversaw the opening of salesrooms in New York, Paris, and Hong Kong. Phillips also recently opened new offices in Paris and Berlin. No plans for auctions in those locations have been announced thus far.
Dolman has, however, indicated a keen interest in expanding the house’s client base in emerging markets by broadening the geographical scope of the pieces sold in its London headquarters.
