See Schiele, Twombly, and Basquiat Side-by-Side at Nahmad Contemporary

“Poetics of the Gesture,” upcoming at New York’s Nahmad Contemporary, will compare Egon Schiele, Cy Twombly, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. On view May 2–June 14, 2014, the exhibition, curated by Dieter Buchhart, includes more than 30 works on paper.
In the show, the formal similarities shared by Schiele, an Austrian expressionist, Twombly, a postwar American artist, and the American neo-expressionist Basquiat will be explored for the first time. The three share a strong, gestural, and dynamic use of line. While Twombly tends toward the abstract compared to the more figurative work of the other two, all three created work that clearly demonstrates the motion of the artist’s hand, evoking materiality and the experiential.
The exhibition at Nahmad Contemporary coincides with another major showcase of Basquiat’s works on paper, at nearby Acquavella Galleries, which will feature some 22 drawings and two paintings by the late art star, on loan from the collection of Herb and Lenore Schorr.
