Sharjah Biennial 2015 Announces Participating Artists

The Sharjah Art Foundation has announced the list of artists for its forthcoming edition entitled Sharjah Biennial 12: “The Past, the Present, the Possible” (SB12), Art News reported. The list was compiled by curator Eungie Joo and associate curator Ryan Inouye.

The biennial will take place from March 5 through June 5 (with opening events from March 5–7) and showcase the works of over fifty artists from over twenty five countries (see 2015 Sharjah Biennial Will Open Week of the Armory Show). Participating artists at the biennial present existing, new and commissioned pieces, with over two thirds falling into the latter two categories. SB12 will also include a series of talks, events and workshops around Sharjah.

Joo told the Emirati daily The National that the inspiration behind the title and theme for the biennial was based on an essay by the French philosopher Henri Lefebvre. “Lefebvre wrote that the past, the present, and the possible cannot be separated,” she explained. “I thought it has a beautiful alignment with the art and the interdisciplinary elements of contemporary art at this moment.”
