Texting Woman Maces Man During JMW Turner Biopic Screening

Mr. Turner, the widely-praised biopic about the British Old Master, surely rouses passions, but not only of the artistic sort. According to Mashable, a woman maced a man who had previously asked her to stop texting, during a screening of the film in Los Angeles. The alleged encounter took place at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, on Monday evening.

An eyewitness told Mashable that the assaulted man was repeatedly saying “Excuse me sir, could you please turn off your screen,” apparently mistaking the woman for a man. After trying to persuade the woman to turn off her phone with the power of words to no avail, the man then tapped the woman on the shoulder.

According to the eyewitness, the woman reacted badly to being touched. “She stands up and starts cursing, saying ‘You hit me, you hit me, I’m going to call the police’,” the eyewitness told Mashable. He said that the woman then turned the phone’s flashlight function on and pointed it directly at the man’s face.

The woman then rummaged her bag, produced the mace spray, took the cap off the bottle, and sprayed the man directly in the face without hesitation, as the nearby movie-goers looked on in shock.

Mr. Turner kept playing all along as the drama unfolded in the theater. The alleged assaulter continued to enjoy Timothy Spall’s award winning performance as Turner for another 20 minutes before members of security removed her from the cinema.
