This Microscopic Comic Strip Fits on a Single Strand of Hair

Claudia Puhlfürst, Juanita Knits the Planet, the world's smallest comic strip, drawn on a single strand of hair.

Incredibly, someone has figured out how to draw a comic strip on a single strand of hair, putting to shame supposed microscopic artists that create work on a grain of rice or in the eye of a needle. As reported by the Creators Project, the tiny comic, Juanita Knits the Planet, is so small that it is completely invisible to the naked eye.

Working with a minuscule canvas, approximately 80 micrometers wide, Andrew Zonenberg used a focused ion beam to etch Claudia Puhlfürst‘s simple line drawings into the hair. The finished product features 12 frames, each about 25 micrometers square. The stories’ heroine, a child named Juanita, might just be the world’s littlest girl at only 10 microns tall.

The mind-blowing comic was made in advance of next month’s Exceptional Hardware Software Meeting in Hamburg, a conference for hackers, scientists, and engineers. The same technology has previously been used to draw elaborate sandcastles on a single grain of sand.
