Six-hundred square meters (approximately 6500 square feet) of exhibition and event space is being added onto Vienna’s Leopold Museum’s roof. The extension of the museum, located in the Austrian capital’s Museumsquartier was announced at a press conference on Monday morning and will cost around €6 million ($8.26 million) to complete.
Officials say that all of the funds will come from within the Museumquartier’s current operating budget and lines of credit. Aside from the amoebic, glass structure, the roof will also get an improved terrace on which visitors can relax or enjoy views of the city.
The square itself is already a popular hangout for locals. Opened in 2001, the Museumsquartier is the eighth largest cultural center in the world, housing, aside from the Leopold Museum, the MUMOK, the Kunsthalle Wien, and the Architekturzentrum Wien, among others.
