Even in the thick of London’s Frieze Week (see “Top Artists at Frieze Masters” and “Top 10 Booths at Frieze London“), VOLTA NY is announcing big plans for next year’s Armory Week: the fair is moving closer to its sister fair the Armory Show, abandoning its SoHo home at 82 Mercer Street for Pier 90 in Hell’s Kitchen on the Hudson River. The 2015 edition of VOLTA NY is slated to open Thursday, March 5, and run through Sunday, March 8.

The Basel-born VOLTA, seen as a more contemporary, boutique counterpoint to the larger Armory Show, features curated, single-artist presentations from its participating dealers (see “The Imagination Runs Wild at VOLTA NY 2014“).

“Having celebrated our tenth anniversary in Basel by moving to a more mature and central venue, we felt that in New York it was also time to take the platform up a notch,” said artistic director Amanda Coulson of the venue change in a press release.

The Pier 90 location, featuring 75,000 square feet of open exhibition space, is more accessible for visitors coming from the Armory Show on Piers 92 and 94, with a covered passageway directly connecting it to Pier 92. Though Coulson feels this adjacency will draw more of a crossover audience from the Armory Show, VOLTA will not let the new home alter its character. “As the scrappy baby in the family,” Coulson assured, “we intend to maintain our different vision for presentations and layout and bring the inimitable VOLTA flair to the venue.”

Entering its eighth year in the States, VOLTA isn’t the only fair that is thinking ahead to Armory Week 2015: as early as last month, the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) Art Show became the first early March fair to announce its 2015 slate of exhibitors (see “The 2015 ADAA Art Show Will Have 72 Galleries“).
