Everybody looks forward to summer—it’s warm, minimal clothing is needed, day-boozing is a legitimate pastime (well, maybe…) and, of course, there are endless opportunities to soak up the sun.
The perception of a tan has gone through various cycles throughout history. A tan used to signify a blue collar job, since much manual and farm labor was done outside. After the Industrial revolution, workers were moved into factories and only the wealthy had the time and means to vacation in the sun. But with skin cancer on the rise, and a growing awareness of the damage sun does to skin, insane tanning is less common.
