Botched David Bowie Mural Enrages Fans

Beast Jesus Bowie, anyone?

The Internet is up in arms—er, tweets—about a mural of David Bowie on the streets of Sheffield, England, by local street artist Trik9. The painting is a clear riff on the now-iconic Brixton portrait by Jimmy C (based on a photo by Brian Duffy), which became a gathering place for mourners following Bowie’s death in January. Unfortunately, the new mural misses the mark in that it looks more like a strange Jerry Seinfeld/Pat Sharp/Ben Stiller/Bowie hybrid than the Ziggy Stardust we all know and love.

The mural was first posted to Twitter by BBC Sheffield at 3:15 a.m. on February 3, and immediately drew the attention of the amateur art critics everywhere, who have been largely relentless, comparing the portrait to everything from Beast Jesus to the “monkey selfie” chimp. Strangely, the original poster didn’t seem to see anything wrong, writing “Looks brilliant doesn’t it?”

Is it just us, or do Bizzaro Bowie’s piercing cheekbones bear a striking resemblance to those weird facial implants Lady Gaga wore in the Born This Way video, and is now being sued over by Orlan? That or maybe an over-contoured Kardashian sister.

The artist has yet to comment.
