Ann S. Moore, who in 2011 retired as the chief executive and chairman of Time Inc.—the Time Warner subsidiary that publishes the Time magazine, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, People, Entertainment Weekly, and other magazines—will be opening a gallery in Chelsea. The new outfit, the Curator Gallery, will take over the storefront at 520 West 23rd Street, a space formerly occupied by Von Lintel Gallery—which is in the process of relocating to Los Angeles after 15 years in Chelsea.
The Curator Gallery is slated to open amid Armory Week, on March 7, Randy Kennedy reports at the New York Times. The gallery’s programming will be determined by guest curators who will be brought in to organize each exhibition. The inaugural show has been curated by artist and Bowdoin College professor Mark Wethli; it will feature works by six Maine-based abstract painters. Moore wants her gallery to cater toward the lower end of the market, with most works priced under $10,000. The space will also host seminars, and watercolor classes on Sundays.
“I’m not sure if you had to make a living you could do what I’m going to do,” Moore told the Times. “The goal is to make it a viable business. Not for me but for the artists. I want to sell a lot of work for them.”
