At Gitlen, Bill Jenkins Gives a Shopping Cart’s View of our Streets

THE DAILY PIC (#1393): Anyone who reads this column knows that I’ve got a thing for straightforward art that’s mostly about pointing things out in the world. Problem is, there tends to be a certain repetition in what gets pointed out, and how. Today’s Pic is a still from a video that gives me hope for my favorite genre. It’s called Walking I, by Bill Jenkins, and it’s now screening on the floor of the back room of Laurel Gitlen gallery in New York. (Click on my image to see a short clip.)
All Jenkins has done is point a camera down from the bottom of a shopping cart and go on a walk through some urban streets. Hey, presto! – we get a cart’s-eye view of the world that gives us a new sense of the world and of seeing. (Courtesy the artist and Laurel Gitlen, New York)
