Starting in September, all eyes will be on the largest city in Turkey, Istanbul. Located between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, the city will host ArtInternational Istanbul and Saltwater, the 14th edition of the Istanbul Biennial, featuring over 80 participants from all around the world displaying artworks in venues on the European and Asian sides of the Bosphorus. If you’re in the city to attend one of these major events, make sure to stop by some very exciting art galleries to make the experience complete.

Ending soon, Lebriz.com is presenting paintings by Gülcan Karadağ showcased at Burn-In Gallery in Vienna. Starting a few days before the fairs, Galerist is featuring two shows at two different locations: Following his 2013 retrospective at the Tate Modern, works by Sudanese artist Ibrahim El Salahi are showcased at Studio, and Seza Paker has created an immersive installation through video, sound, and collage at Tepebaşı. To see more contemporary artworks, visit Mixer. Its exhibition, as part of the second anniversary of Exhibist magazine, features a diverse selection of Turkish artists, such as Metin Çelik, Gozde Turkkan, and Gozde Ilkin. In addition, “Minor Heroisms” is focusing on major international artists, including Imran Qureshi and Aisha Khalid, who are presenting miniature compositions, and give their critical expansions of traditional techniques into a contemporary vocabulary at Galeri Zilberman.

Running parallel to the biennial and presented for the first time in Turkey, the exhibition at artSümer focuses on Basim Magdy’s film “The Everyday Ritual of Solitude Hatching Monkeys” and his photographs, bringing new forms of expression through poetically layered images. If your schedule is tight, that’s not a problem since you have until November 15 to see “All That Is Solid” organized by the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art in collaboration with MoMA/MoMA PS1. The second temporary installation of the “YAP Istanbul Modern: Young Architects Program” is offering emerging architects the opportunity to design a temporary installation in Istanbul Modern’s courtyard.

Admiring the beauty of Istanbul and art gems of the city sounds like a very nice way to spend the end of summer!
