Perhaps best known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration, the largest folk festival in the world, Germany’s third-largest city has recently experienced an uptick in tourism, particularly in the summer months, which kick off with NIGHT ART. Situated on the banks of the River Isar, Munich has the benefits of a small town, offset by the prestige of its world-class sights, in particular its art galleries and museums.

The $120 million, 22,000-square-meter Pinakothek der Moderne museum doubles down on photography this month, with shows by pioneering photographer Eadweard Muybridge and renowned American artist Nicholas Nixon. When viewed side by side, these two shows are an exercise in complimentary contrasts, with Nixon standing at one end of a legacy whose groundwork was laid, in part, by his 19th-century predecessor. Thomas Ruff‘s photography, on display at Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle, more directly pays tribute to its roots, referencing historical techniques through an appropriation of the female nude. In these works, Ruff scanned old photographs, digitally inverted the color scale, and created blue-tinted images the size of the original negatives, deliberately calling attention to the digitalized world and the disappearance of analogue materials. Also featuring photographic works is Galerie Klüser, with a series by French-born artist Klavdij Sluban. The exhibition, “Hauteville House Guernsey,” presents haunting black and white images, which are the result of the year spent by Sluban at Victor Hugo’s former home on the Channel Island of Guernsey. At the same time, the gallery is presenting panoramic, expressive drawings of the Swiss mountains by contemporary artist and expat Jonathan Bragdon.

After making stops in Paris and New York, Larry Clark‘s acclaimed solo show “They Thought I Were But I Aren’t Anymore” debuted at Galerie Karl Pfefferle last month, with works spanning his career from 1961 to the present. For a change of pace, stop by Galerie Andreas Binder, featuring paintings by Chinese-born, Munich-based artist Haiying Xu in which she combines personal memories of China with her experiences of life in Germany.

Whatever brings you to Munich this month, there is plenty to see. So enjoy your Weißwurst with a side of art.
