Things are heating up in Florida, as the art world descends on Miami Beach for Art Basel, Art Miami, and the half dozen other art fairs and events taking place in and around the renowned Wynwood Art District. Though art fair hopping is sure to keep most collectors very busy, there is plenty going on in the city for when you need a break from the crowds. For an alternative to the gallery scene, there are a number of pop-up shows taking place during the week. “Smell The Magic,” presented by Spinello Projects, features Toronto-based artist Kris Knight, whose paintings address issues of identity, sexuality, and the future of gender politics. Also popping up is the Mural Project at the long-abandoned Miami Marine Stadium. With graffiti covering nearly every surface, this public installation pays tribute to the street artists who have transformed the site into an open-air gallery. For the amateur archaeologists, Daniel Arsham’s “Welcome to the Future” at Locust Projects is a major site-specific installation, which transforms the gallery into an excavation site filled with blackberries, VHS tapes, and other relics of 20th-century media. For a dose of popular culture, don’t miss Andy Warhol at Adamar Fine Arts. The show, “Sight Unseen,” highlights the development of Warhol’s silkscreen process, and features a number of never-before-seen works alongside iconic images.

With expectations running high for this art fair season, Miami does not disappoint.
