Munich’s most famous event, Oktoberfest, is over, but this city in Bavaria, Germany has a lot to offer this week if you are interested in art. The third most populous city in Germany, home to Arnold Schwarzenegger and internationally successful soccer team Bayern Munich, is world renowned for its art collections, on display in public and private museums, as well as in its numerous galleries. The Münchner Stadtmuseum is showing a permanent exhibition titled “Typically Munich!” where you can explore the trials and tribulations of the city. Currently the museum has on view a special exhibition, “Rumford. Recipes for a better Bavaria,” about Sir Benjamin Thompson, also called Count Rumford, the creator of Munich’s famous park, the English Garden; be sure to take a long walk through this picturesque part of the city. In the immediate vicinity of Munich’s art collections, in the well-known Theresienstraße, the Barbara Gross Galerie has the first solo exhibition of Italian installation artist Sonia Leimer. Works by young contemporary artist Craig Yu can be found in the collection of another large museum in Munich, the Pinakothek der Moderne, and are also currently in the showrooms of Häusler Contemporary.

Art enthusiasts have the chance to see selected artworks of German and international artists at two art fairs. During the first weekend in November, the 59th edition of the Kunstmesse München is happening at the Postpalast. At Germany’s oldest art and antiques fair, 38 art dealers from Europe, such as Galerie Brockstedt and Galerie Koch, are showing works from their inventories. There is also HIGHLIGHTS—International Art Fair Munich, which was founded in 2009 by 19 international art dealers. Beck & Eggeling and Galerie Richard Ruberl are just a couple of the selected art dealers participating in this art fair, with masterpieces ranging from classical antiquity to modern art.

So enjoy the art and, if you have the time, the German Gemütlichkeit in one of the beer gardens during your stay in Munich.
