It's finally happening.

The first internet domain dedicated to the global art community, .ART, is now active and has  more than 60 well-known museums and arts organizations on board, according to a statement from London-based .ART.

Included in the list are The Art Institute of Chicago, Centre Pompidou, Fondation Cartier, Hauser & Wirth, Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, LACMA, MAXXI, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Walker Art Center, and Tate.

Several early adopters have already launched websites, including AES+F,  Canesso Gallery, Galerie Meyer, and FITZ & CO.

“Our mission is to preserve the cultural legacy of the global art world,” Ulvi Kasimov, founder of .ART, says in a statement. “We are honoured that so many respected institutions from all over the world share our vision and conviction that .ART will transform the arts community’s relationship with the internet and help protect their brand’s heritage online.”

Those early participants will get first access to names on the new domain, according to the press release, “in advance of domains being available for purchase by the general public in summer 2017.” Registration for the “art world,” as its states in the release, however, will be ready in February 2017. For example, Hauser & Wirth will commemorate its 25th anniversary in 2017 with an interactive website detailing its history, while Centre Pompidou is creating a microsite in English for potential visitors. Other museums and institutions will be using the platform to show their collections online.

Also among the early adopters are: collector Steffan Ahrenberg; Fondation Beyeler; Artists Space; and Bolshoi Theatre.

The Tate museum is, as its digital director Ros Lawler, says in a statement, “delighted to take part in the launch of this new domain, which will help promote some of the world’s greatest art collections, galleries and museums.”
