The #SaatchiSelfie competition, which was launched this past January ahead of the opening of the exhibition “From Selfie to Self-Expression,” has announced its star-studded list of judges: Tracey Emin, Idris Khan, Juergen Teller, Juno Calypso, and Saatchi Gallery CEO Nigel Hurst.

The competition closes on March 12, upon which judges will create a shortlist from the thousands of selfies they have received from the public. The ten winners of the #SaatchiSelfie campaign will have their submitted selfie image displayed at the Saatchi Gallery.

“To date we’ve received more than 8,000 submissions from over 100 countries,” said Hurst. “We have been enormously impressed with the way many of the entries have approached the creative challenge we set, and lived up to the spirit of the exhibition that their work will be part of.”

“From Selfie to Self-Expression,” due to debut at Saatchi Gallery on March 30, will be the world’s first exhibition to explore the history of the selfie, from the old masters to the present day, and to celebrate the selfie as a legitimate mode of artistic expression. The show also aims to underscore the emerging role of the smartphone as a medium.

The exhibition will showcase works which are fueled by interactive, digital and user-generated content, and include a diverse roster of artists including Christopher Baker, Juno Calypso, Tracey Emin, Vincent van Gogh, Mohau Modisakeng, Rembrandt, Cindy Sherman, and Rafael Lozano-Hemmerand Velazquez.
