What You Need to Know: German artist Regine Schumann works in the lineage of the Light and Space movement, as well as the Minimalism of Donald Judd and Dan Flavin. Her Minimalist sculptures, which range from box-shaped individual works to large-scale installations, are composed of acrylic color plates made exclusively for Schumann. Strikingly, the geometric works are also deeply emotive, conjuring up the sensation of being in a dream or an otherworldly realm. Her works often incorporate black lights or fluorescent materials. The artist recently had an exhibition at Galerie Hoffmann in Friedbrieg, which showcased works made over the past three decades.

Why We Like It: Schumann’s sculptures uniquely meld the traditions of both Minimalism and Concrete art. A sense of playfulness also permeates her practice. Though consisting of seemingly straightforward shapes, Schumann’s careful layering of colored plates and small cut-outs means that the appearance of the works shifts depending on where the viewer is standing. With her room-size installations, Schumann attempts to create and configure what she calls the “room temperature” of an existing architectural space so that it vibrates with a kind of color-based resonance.

What the Gallery Says: “Regine builds her exhibitions with great precision like an architect. One would like to say about her radicalism: Perfect! She knows how to create a sense of ‘theater,’ working with light, with colored light, with black light as part of U.V. radiation. She immerses her entire exhibition in certain tones of light for precise periods of time. Regine experiments. She can choose the lighting, change the colors, exercising an extreme influence on the conversations in the room.”
