At MoMA, Andrea Geyer’s ‘Insistence’ That Women Be Heard
THE DAILY PIC: More proof that herstory has been considered no story.
THE DAILY PIC (1425); Andrea Geyer’s 2013 video called Insistence is playing at the Museum of Modern Art, and insist it does, on the continuing neglect of women in the histories that are told about modern art. Geyer’s video let’s us watch an ever-growing pile of photos of notable female figures, while a voiceover narrates some of their neglect. (Click on my image to watch the video)
After all, ask someone about the founding of MoMA and if one name comes up, it will be the name of curator Alfred Barr. But what about the three women who actually did the founding and hired him? Lillie P. Bliss, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and Mary Quinn Sullivan have zero name recognition outside of museological circles. Today, thirty years after the New Art History began to demand attention for women, Geyer and her like still have important work to do. (The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
