In Brooklyn, Jeppe Hein’s Art Gets Hard Use
THE DAILY PIC: The Dane's public art really gives itself to its public.
THE DAILY PIC (#1372): The most important thing about this piece of public art by the Dane Jeppe Hein, now installed in Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York, is how the grass has gone brown all around it. That’s proof of just how aggressively the public is using and enjoying Hein’s work of art.
On its own, the sculpture is a fine but fairly predictable installation: The echo between its mirrored uprights and the skyline beyond is not exactly subtle. But once the piece gets inhabited, it comes close to being truly “relational” art – about what people do in and around and with it, rather than what it was up to before they arrived.
