Ivan Grubanov will represent Serbia at the 56th Venice Biennale, reports Art Daily.
The installation titled United Dead Nations, which will be presented at the Serbian Pavilion, curated by Lidija Merenik, plays upon the concept of the United Nations as the ultimate form of global organizing. The work raises questions about the role of the UN in the contemporary context and its influence and jurisdiction over the global geo-political paradigms. Grubanov’s work combines flags and painting—his primary medium—articulating a historical memory against a contemporary backdrop.
Grubanov establishes a dialogue on what the notions of nation means to us in this moment by bringing to light nations that no longer exist, such as the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Soviet Union, but whose memory still echoes in our geospheres.
The Amsterdam-based Grubanov was born in Belgrade in 1976 and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade in painting.
