Must-See Art Guide: Madrid

This week's guide features Joan Miró, Alex Katz, José Guerrero, and more.

ARCOmadrid is in full swing, and so is the Spanish art scene. While the annual art fair certainly demands your attention—this year it’s hosting 200 international galleries—don’t forget to venture out onto the streets to visit local galleries and check out what they have to offer. Be sure to see the exceptional exhibition of Joan Miró at Galería Elvira González that features his lesser-known and wonderfully inventive sculptures, which are just as playful, reductive, and childlike as his paintings. Over at Galería Javier López & Fer Francés, you can check out an interesting part of Alex Katz’s process with a show of the cartoons he uses to transfer drawings to canvas—a useful peek behind the curtain of one of the more slick painters of our time. I’m particularly intrigued by the work of yet another painter currently on view at Galería Canyón: José Guerrero’s warm abstractions feel akin to the work of Mary Heilmann or Raoul De Keyser, and feel fresh and contemporary despite most of the work on display having been made in the 1970s.

If that’s still not enough, take a look at our “Top 10 Things to Do in Madrid During ARCO 2017.” Better get busy, because there’s a lot to see before the weekend is up.
