Must-See Art Guide: Milan

This week's guide features Chantal Joffe, Osvaldo Licini, Viviane Sassen, and more.

The proliferation of international art fairs continue, and this week brings us Turin’s Artissima. Billed as Italy’s most important art fair, the annual event gathers over 200 galleries in the glamorous glass pavilion previously built for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. If you’ve already traveled to Turin for the fair, you might want to take the two-hour drive to neighboring Milan—it just so happens to be currently full of excellent gallery exhibitions.

Be sure to visit Monica De Cardenas for a selection of work of the indefatigable Chantal Joffe. The popular painter continues her signature practice of loosely gestural portraiture, and the show notably includes some of her lesser-known pastel pieces (debatably some of her strongest work to date!). Your next stop should be Galleria Tega for the achingly lovely work of Osvaldo Licini, one of the century’s most significant and underrated Italian artists. The gallery boasts over 40 works, many never before or rarely exhibited to the public, making it an especially unmissable occasion. Then, the solo show of fashion and fine art photographer Viviane Sassen at Galleria Carla Sozanni is inventive, colorful, and punchy, and should definitely be on your radar.
