Must-See Art Guide: Munich

Let’s turn our sights to Germany this week. Over in Munich, this summer promises to be exciting and art-filled, thanks to the efforts of local gallery venues and the numerous public art projects on display organized this year by PAM. With shows ranging from canonical Ab Ex painters to populist street art, you’ve got options.

Kick things off with a terrific Paul Klee show over at Galerie Thomas. If you were fretting over missing this one, good news—it’s just been extended to June 9, so hurry on over. I’m never one to pass up the chance to see some very painterly painting by the likes of Hans Hofmann, Sam Francis, and Adolph Gottlieb in person, and if neither are you, you should head to American Contemporary Art Gallery. Their group exhibition, “Abstraction in Color,” runs through 29. Then, there’s the rhetorically titled solo exhibition “Why talk of love at a time like this?!” at Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle by one of Berlin’s most promising exciting artists, Sophie Reinhold. According to the show press release, her newest body of work explores “veiling, camouflage, and emptiness” as it clashes with assertive presence and gestures. You can count on her canvases to be unpredictable, clever, and never boring.

But there’s plenty more where that came from. Find artnet’s full list of picks below, and  Auf Wiedersehen.
