OMA Designs New Fondazione Prada Building
Fondazione Prada, the cultural institution founded in 1995 by fashion couple Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, has unveiled plans for it’s new OMA-designed building set to open in Milan in May 2015.
An institution dedicated to contemporary art and culture, the foundation has organized many solo exhibitions of famed artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Tom Sachs, and John Baldessari. For their 20th year, Fondazione Prada will have a new building, designed by OMA—the architecture firm co-founded by Rem Koolhaas in 1975.
The project includes a total transformation of a former industrial complex which boasts about 120,000 square feet of potential exhibition space. OMA will create three new structures: a duplex space for exhibitions (Podium), a multifunctional auditorium (Cinema), and a nine-story tower with storefront windows overlooking the city’s center (Torre).
However, the institution will still operate out of its original 18th-century Venice building, making the new space a satellite site of the foundation.
