THE DAILY PIC: Instead of making a splash, Parreno goes for a slow burn.

THE DAILY PIC: Philippe Parreno has made the best installation yet at the Park Avenue Armory in New York. (Ignoring, for the moment, its silly title: H {N)Y P N(Y} OSIS.) Whereas most of the previous installations have been instantly impressive and fun … and then as quickly forgettable, Parenno’s is a slow burn to take in – two hours seems the minimum stay – and never settles in to a simple reading. The show consists of any number of installations and videos and performances, each of which has the complex resonance of an Old Master painting. That means that Parreno’s project as a whole has some of the feel of a visit to the Prado or the Louvre. (I said some of the feel ….)
