Joan Jonas will represent the United States at the 2015 Venice Biennale. The veteran video and performance artist, who will create a new installation at the Giardini for the commission, was selected by the US State Department in collaboration with Paul C. Ha, director of the List Visual Arts Center at MIT—the commissioning institution behind next year’s US pavilion, Carol Vogel reports in the New York Times.

The 78-year-old artist’s presentation will be co-organized by Ha and Ute Meta Bauer, who is the director of the Nanyang Technological University’s Center for Contemporary Art in Singapore.

“Joan has been a visionary for such a long time,”  Ha told the Times. “Yet she hasn’t had much exposure in Venice.”

Jonas will create a new installation on-site incorporating video, sound, objects, and drawings. The 2015 Venice Biennale will run from May 9–November 22. Jonas follows Sarah Sze, who took over the US pavilion for the 2013 exhibition.
