At the Studio Museum, Sadie Barnette Imagines Minimal Lawn Ornaments

THE DAILY PIC (#1388): This untitled image by Sadie Barnette is one of several of her photos included in “Everything, Everyday”, a three-person show at the Studio Museum in Harlem. For this little series, Barnette places objects onto photographs, then re-photographs the combination. (There’s another example below.) She’s not the first person to do that – I’ve written about the similar shots that Nina Katchadourian has taken in her airline seats. But where Katchadourian tends toward wit and satire, Barnette is all about telling, even poignant combinations.
Here, we’ve got the fake nature of an urban lawn combined with the found minimalism of what seem to be a pair of children’s blocks.
It could almost be a test-run for John McCracken’s latest concept for garden gnomes. (Images courtesy the artist)
