Tom Friedman’s Great Artistic Garbage Patch

THE DAILY PIC: The trickster artist floats his studio sweepings.

Tom Friedman is at his best when he’s at his simplest, and there could hardly be anything simpler than this: A mobile made of tiny bits of studio flotsam and jetsam, suspended on the finest monofilament. It’s in his current solo show at Stephen Friedman gallery in London. I’m not sure why it seems so utterly delightful. Maybe it’s because of the poignant absurdity of treating trash like precious stuff. Or because it reads like one of those “word clouds”, materialized. Or because it’s a perfect synechdoche for everything that goes on in an artist’s studio. (Photo by Lucy Hogg)
