Could airports be the new place to see contemporary art?

If JFK has anything to say about it, maybe. Outside Time (2014), a monumental sculpture by Brooklyn-based artist Dimitar Lukanov was unveiled today at JFK Airport Terminal 4. The sculpture joins about 75 other artworks currently residing in the terminal. It is the signature piece of a three-work commission to the artist by JFKIAT LLC, with the other two expected to be installed this spring.

At 4,650 pounds with 90% of the piece being airborne, it pushes the boundaries of possible and impossible. Simultaneously heavy in mass and light in form, it is defined by its dualities.

Lukanov says of his work, “I do transparent sculptures that converse with nature. The bronze and iron used in my work long for permanence, but the forms and illusions are ephemeral. The end result of my sculpture is an abbreviated script of matter dissolved within the air.”

More information can be found at Lukanov’s website or at JFKIAT LLC.
