London to Get its Own High Line?
New York has the High Line, and London could soon get a “Line” of its own. Dealer Megan Piper has teamed up with urban regeneration expert Clive Dutton to create a sculpture walk running from the O2 Arena in Greenwich, across the Thames, all the way to the Olympic Park in Stratford, the Telegraph reports.
30 outdoor artworks selected by a panel of experts would be installed along the course for a period of two years. However, production budgets are tight: “We haven’t got the funds to commission,” explains Piper, “so we’re calling for galleries and museums to lend us pieces from their basements and reserve collections, as well as asking living artists to propose their own existing works.”
Already known as the Line, the idea is supported by London Mayor Boris Johnson, filmmaker and Olympic Ceremony mastermind Danny Boyle and artist Mark Wallinger. The budget is estimated at £3 million (US$5 million) for 3 years, and crowd-funding is underway. The organizers’ hope to reach their first target of £150,000 (US$250,000) by March 28. The Line will be inaugurated this summer, funding allowing.
