New to Market Mondrian Could Break World Record

A classic painting by Piet Mondrian will hit the auction block for the first time at Sotheby’s London’s Impressionist and Modern Art evening sale on June 23, where it is expected to set a new world record, the Telegraph reports.
Kept out of the public eye for half a century, Composition with Red, Blue and Grey (1927) comes with a £18 million estimate, more than the artist’s current record of £17.6 million, set in 2009.
Helena Newman, co-head of Impressionist and Modern Art worldwide at the auction house told the British newspaper: “It’s from what is considered to be Mondrian’s best period, in the 20s, by which time he has developed this very iconic and unique style which is so beautifully epitomised in this work.”
“It’s iconic,” she added: “It’s a classic blue chip Mondrian, with everything you could want.”
