Europe’s First Techno Museum To Open in Frankfurt

Cities the world over open museums that reflect the tastes of their inhabitants: Berlin has a museum dedicated to sausages, Manila has a selfie museum (see Get Your Selfie Sticks Out, a Selfie Museum Opens in the Philippines), and Frankfurt is about to get an institution dedicated to electronic music, Deutsche Welle reports.
Scheduled to open in 2017, the MOMEM—short for Museum of Modern Electronic Music–reaffirms the centrality of techno to the German music scene, its club culture, and identity.
The museum will archive and display the history of electronic music, explain its cultural relevance, and offer a visitor experience in the innovative vein of the genre itself.
The museum states it will focus on the sensorial experience provided by techno, which makes the exhibition design sound a bit like clubbing made accessible for visitors of all ages.
MOMEM is the brainchild of Andreas Tomalla, who is widely credited for inventing the word “techno.”
Tomalla pioneered the form with his “Techno Party” events in the 1980s. He remains active as a trance DJ and producer, and is the first honorary chairman of the Friends of MOMEM.
