Amsterdam is no newbie to the art world. Just think of the masters: this place was once home to Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, and countless others. This well-preserved city, with its intricate canals and dazzling architecture, is always oozing art and culture—this week more than ever. KunstRAI, which opened yesterday and runs until tomorrow, is the Netherlands’ longest-running fair and showcases both established and emerging galleries. Focusing on booths dedicated to individual artists, this fair offers visitors the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of an artist’s vision and work. KunstRAI may be the city’s main attraction this week, but there are also plenty more shows to see around town, from Anne Appleby and Volker Hüller, to Jan Dibbets and Ruth van Beek. Browse our recommended guide of must-see shows, and be sure to choose your mode of transportation wisely—the streets are narrow and the canals have swallowed many a tourists’ bike. Or so we’ve heard.
