Lower East Side’s DCKT Contemporary Closing

DCKT Contemporary, a longtime fixture of the Lower East Side gallery scene that was launched by Dennis Christie and Ken Tyburski in 2002, will shut down for good when its current exhibition closes on October 19.

“We extend immeasurable gratitude to everyone we have worked with over the years, especially the collectors, critics and curators who have supported our vision,” Christie and Tyburski wrote in an email on October 8. “Most importantly, our sincere and heartfelt thanks go to all the artists we have had the immense honor of working with. Without you, none of this would have ever been possible!”

The gallery’s final show, devoted to the playful, provocative, and grottesque works of Sophie Crumb and Aline Kominsky-Crumb, legendary comics artist R. Crumb’s daughter and wife, respectively, was recently reviewed by chief New York Times critic Roberta Smith, who had especially positive things to say about Kominsky-Crumb’s work.

“Her first solo in a New York gallery was in 2007,” Smith wrote. “Now she is showing new work in tandem with her daughter, Sophie Crumb. Emphasizing another family tie may not be the best idea right now, especially since she could easily have handled the whole space.”

Other artists who show with DCKT include Russell Tyler, Ryan Humphrey, Lia Halloran, and Michael Velliquette.
