The recent Time 100 Gala was the party to see and be seen at by the world’s most famous and accomplished people. The crowd was a mix of the high and the low brow, the fashionable and the musical, the arty and the brainy (see Björk and Chris Ofili Are Among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People).

But the highlight of the night was no doubt, the electrifying 30-minute performance by honoree Kanye West for the event’s star-studded crowd. He closed his performance with his 2005 hit “Gold Digger,” in which the singer perused the crowd, shaking hands and accepting hugs.

His wife, and fellow honoree, Kim Kardashian told People she didn’t even know about the special act. “He always likes to surprise me with what he has up his sleeve,” she said, “so I’m always so pleasantly surprised.”

“There is nothing I like more than hearing him scream about the Hamptons to a room of people who own a lot of f–ing property in the Hamptons,” Last Week Tonight host John Oliver (also honored) told The Hollywood Reporter about Kanye’s “New Slave” performance. “And it is the spectacular response to ‘We want pre-nup!’,” he continued. “60-year-old men, all of sudden coming to life, and saying ‘Actually, Kanye has a point; you have to have this discussion.’ That’s a lot of millionaires who are absolutely with him on that one!”

A different, more spontaneous event happened at the gala (obviously still involving the power couple) when comedian Amy Schumer decided to make a dive on the red carpet in front of Kanye and Kim. Their reaction? Kanye, who’s expression stayed the same, didn’t look twice and Kim; and Kim, with pursed lips, gave a polite smile.

See below for some footage of his live performance.
